Asheville or Bust

Somehow we managed to build a vacation around visiting Downton Abbey (oops I mean Biltmore), exploring green mountains, and eating delicious food in a hip artsy city. Score.

I'd describe Asheville as a mix between Providence, Portland ME, and Burlington but with a southern drawl. Everyone is super friendly (we got a parking ticket warning which is unheard of here in $20 ticket land), they love to play cornhole, drink outside while looking perfectly mountain-artsy hip, and eat good food.

Here are my most memorable food moments and some shots of our fun.

Early Girl Eatery ~ ate the early girl benny, grit cakes topped with tomato, spinach, poached eggs, tomato gravy and avocado

The Wedge Brewery ~ sampled local beers and ate roasted peanuts while people watching

White Duck Taco Shop ~ ate fish tacos and watermelon mint salad outside, under an umbrella, next to the freight train tracks and vibrant river arts district

French Broad Chocolates ~ ate a spicy nibby chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream at this insane chocolate shop where we and fought epic chocolate temptation

I was worried visiting Biltmore, George Vanderbilt's 8,000 acre home, would be too much like Disney World but it was magical. We swore Carson was going to walk around the corner and say "Yes, my lord." at any moment.

Ahhhh now back to real life far away from castles and gardens and straight into a load of laundry.

  1. You caught the essence of Asheville in this post! I will refer back to this for restaurant ideas next time we go b/c I don't think we've been to any of the ones you mentioned.

  2. LOVE LOVE LOVED this!!!!!

    xoxo, e

  3. I live about an hour from Asheville, it really is a fun city! We celebrated my husband's birthday there last November and will probably celebrate our Anniversary there in June. It's a fun town with great food on every corner!

  4. I live in Knoxville, TN, which is a fairly short drive from Asheville, and it really is the most amazing little town. Very artsy, and has an almost liberal feel but with a Southern touch :)
